Story featured on Farm Progress’ The Farmer and first published in Jan 2022On the surface, the Olson family may look like a typical story of farming in the Midwest. The farm is 2,300 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The operation, its land, and land stewardship philosophies have been passed down from one generation to the next.
But looking closer, Robert Olson Farms Inc. near Hawley, Minnesota does things a little differently than many other farms in the Red River Valley.
Kari Olson is a fourth-generation farmer who, with help from her sisters, Stacie Hinrichs and Nicole Strafelda, farms alongside her father, Rob Olson. As the operation has been passed down through the generations, the family has continued to uphold the farm’s strong land stewardship values, including cover cropping and no-till practices.
“If we can do our part to keep the soil where it’s at and hopefully build it back, I know it’s a slow process, but that’s our goal here,” Kari said.
